52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks – 6 – Favorite Name

Today is the last day of week 6 and the theme for this week on 52 Ancestors is “Favorite Name.” Anyone who knows me very well knows that I dislike choosing just one favorite anything. This topic reminded me of the song from the musical Sound of Music, “My Favorite Things.” So I have written a few of my favorite ancestor names which can be sung to the tune of the first section of that song.

     Ich-a-bod Howe--- and Pe-ni-nah Par-ker,
     Je-mi-ma Booth--- and E-li-sha Ship-man,
     And there is Com-mo-dore Per-ry O'-Neal
These are a few of my fa-vor-ite names.

If you would like to read the posts I did about these ancestors, here are the dates:
     Ichabod Howe – June 5 & 6, 2017
     Peninah Parker – December 26, 2017
     Jemima Booth – January 15, 2018
     Elisha Shipman – April 7, 2017
     Commodore Perry O'Neal – April 14 & 15, 2017

Ancestor Birthday - October 1 - John Howe 1732

John Howe was my 5th gt-grandfather, born 1 Oct 1732, in Wallingford, the Colony of Connecticut. John's parents were Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Gaylord) Howe. The Howe Genealogies published in 1929 listed 11 siblings for John with at least 6 of his siblings living long enough to be married. It showed that 4 died as young children.

In the History of the town of Goshen, Connecticut a listing of marriages showed that John married twice: 1 Apr 1756 to Mary Wadhams and on 15 Apr 1766 to Lydia Norton. After he and Mary had 4 children: Mary, Experience, Anna and Deliverance, Mary died 30 Sept 1765.
John and Lydia had 7 children: John, Ichabod (my 4th gt-grandfather), Isaac, Luman, Daniel, Seth, and Lydia.

Since I had not found a death date for John, I checked some of the family trees on Ancestry.com. It was easy to see that one which said he died in 1736 was incorrect. But one gave a date of 1781 in Canaan Connecticut. The Howe Genealogies stated that John had moved to Canaan in 1766, apparently after his marriage to Lydia. The youngest child was born about 1779, so this date was plausible. Most researchers have left his death date blank, so I probably will also until I find some evidence about when and where he died.

Ancestor Birthday - September 16 - Lucy Irene Howe - 1811- 1882

Yesterday I wrote about an ancestor who lived in Wallingford, Connecticut, Jeremiah Howe. Today it is his 2nd gt-granddaughter, who was my 3rd gt-grandmother, that I intend to write about, Lucy Irene Howe. Lucy didn't live in Wallingford. She was born in the town of Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut, 16 Sep 1811 to Ichabod and Irene (Scovill) Howe.

Lucy was just 2 years old when her mother Irene died. Irene died just a few days after her father. She was listed in his will, so Lucy was entitled to that inheritance from her grandfather and her father filed papers with the probate court to be appointed guardian for her. It was there I learned who her parents were and so gained a large number of Connecticut relatives. Lucy had an older sister and 2 older brothers. Her father remarried sometime before the 1820 census, so she grew up with a step-mother.

Lucy married Timothy Chase on New Years Eve, 31 Dec 1832, in Cornwall. She and Timothy had 8 children, 3 girls and 5 boys. The family did not stay put. They were in Sharon, Connecticut in the 1840 census and were in Goshen, Connecticut for the 1850 census. Then they moved to Ohio and were in Leroy township Lake County in the 1860 census. But they didn't stay in Ohio and were in Illinois in Rivoli township, Mercer County for the 1870 census. There was at least one more move to Nebraska. Her husband had settled on homestead land in Atlanta Township, Saline County, but died 5 Jul 1877 before finishing his claim, so it was patented to Lucy, as his widow. Lucy was living with her youngest son and his family on the 1880 census there in Nebraska. She died 10 Mar 1882 and we believe both she and Timothy, her husband, were buried in Atlanta Cemetery, Atlanta Township, Saline County, Nebraska.

Ancestor Birthday - September 15 - Jeremiah Howe - 1675 - 1749

It was in February when I wrote about ancestors who lived in Wallingford, Connecticut. Now it is time to write about it again.

Jeremiah Howe, my 7th gt-grandfather, was born 15 Sep 1675 in the town of Wallingford, Connecticut, the son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth (Peck) Howe. I have 4 Jeremiah Howes in a row on my pedigree chart and this Jeremiah is number 2 going back. Reading the Barbour collection of vital records for Wallingford can get quite confusing with so many Jeremiahs.

Between 1700 and 1710 there were a number of marriages and deaths of wives for Jeremiah and his father. I will call them Jeremiah Sr and Jr to try to help keep them straight. I am not convinced that the Howe genealogy written by Daniel Wait Howe and published in 1929 has all of them correctly identified, but I will use their record.

Jeremiah Sr's first wife Elizabeth died before Dec 1701 because he married Elizabeth Culver then. This 2nd Elizabeth died 17 Jun 1703. A year later, Jeremiah Jr married Judith Cook, daughter of Samuel and Hope (Parker) Cook 20 Jun 1704. It was 9 Apr 1705 when Jeremiah Sr married widow Mary Cook. Jeremiah Jr's wife Judith died 20 Mar 1708 and about six months later on 7 Sep 1708 he married a Mary Cook.

Jeremiah Jr and his wives had at least 5 children including one named Jeremiah. From the Barbour collection we learn that Jeremiah Sr died 22 Sep 1740 at age 90 and his son died 9 years later, 22 Sep 1749 "in the 75th yr of his age." My 7th gt-grandfather had just past his 74th birthday, so he was in his 75th year. They both died in Wallingford.

Ancestor Birthday - Isaac Norton - 1712-1793

Isaac Norton was my 6th gt-grandfather. His birth to Joseph and Deborah (Cruttenden) Norton on 17 Aug 1712 was recorded in the Barbour Collection for Durham, Middlesex County, Connecticut. The town of Durham was formed in 1708. His marriage to Mary Rockwall, of Windsor, on 12 Nov 1735 was also recorded in Durham.

From his will written in 1782, we can see that Isaac and Mary had at least 9 children, 4 sons (Silvanus, Isaac Jr, Aaron, Joel) and 5 daughters (Abigail Peck, Mary Curtis, Lydia How, Anna Scott, Deborah Blakely). I was glad to see that my 5th gt-grandmother, Lydia (Norton) Howe received a bequest of 15 pounds from her father's will.

When he wrote his will in 1782, Isaac stated that he was of Farmington, County of Hartford, State of Connecticut. On the 1790 census, Isaac was listed in the town of Bristol, which was formed from Farmington in 1785 and was on the west side. There were just 2 people in his household, he and a female, probably his wife Mary. Adjoining entries show his son Isaac with 7 people in his household and his son Joel with 8 in his household.

The Hale listing of headstone inscriptions for Bridge St. Cemetery, in the town of Bristol, showed that Isaac died 4 Jan 1793 and Mary died 23 Nov 1791. The Find A Grave entry for Isaac gives the death year as 1797, however I believe that is a misreading of a very old gravestone. The Hale listing was done in 1934, so the gravestone might have been easier to read then.

I am planning that tomorrow and the next day I will do a transcription of Isaac's will.

Where Were My Ancestors? - 1850 Census

This will be the last post in this series, since before 1850 the census did not list everyone, but only the head of household, so many of my ancestors (wives and children) were not listed by name.

Yesterday there were 35 ancestors found on the 1860 census (plus 3 were not found) and today there are 42, plus 2 not found . Only 1 of my gt-grandparents was found on the 1850 census, the others were either not born yet or the 2 who were still in Europe.

This map shows where my ancestors were in 1850. It has gained from yesterday for the total number of locations, now up to 17. Of these, 6 are the same and there are 11 different ones. Now there are 6 states represented, Iowa has 6 different counties, Indiana has 5 different counties, and Ohio has 3 different counties. So Connecticut, Missouri and Illinois just have 1 county each. When the counties are close together it is hard to mark them so you can see the different place. If you have questions, get out your maps and atlases and look them up.

Here is chart with their names (women's maiden names), locations (County and State) and their relationship to me. Since our number of ancestors doubles for each generation, the chart gets longer.

We are now back to 1870. Yesterday there were 27 ancestors found on the 1880 census and today there are 31. These 4 newly listed had died between 1870 and 1880.

Where Were My Ancestors? - 1880 Census

There is a 20 year gap between yesterday and today since the 1890 census was mostly destroyed. There were 27 ancestors found on the 1880 census compared to 19 yesterday from the 1900 census. My grandparents weren't born yet, but there were some 3rd gt-grandparents who were still alive.

This map shows where my ancestors were in 1880. It has the same total number as yesterday (8) but only 4 are the same and there are 4 different ones. Again there are 6 different states represented, Oregon has 2 different counties and Iowa also has 2 different counties although in both cases they are adjoining.

Here is chart with their names (women's maiden names), locations (County and State) and their relationship to me. Since our number of ancestors doubles for each generation, the chart gets longer.

Ancestor Birthday - June 17th - Timothy Chase 1812 - 1877

Timothy Chase was one of my 3rd great-grandfathers. Although I have listed his father as Charles Chase on my website, I am not completely confident that is correct. It is based on a statement made in a local history from Nebraska in an article about Luman Chase, one of Timothy's sons. Since it is likely that Luman provided the information and Charles would have been his grandfather it does have some credibility. But I haven't found any other documentation for this relationship. If there are any Chase cousins reading this and you have some other source for this, please let me know.

Timothy's birthdate of 17 Jun 1812 has been calculated from his stated age at his death. The county where Timothy was born is still uncertain. In the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses his birthplace was reported as New York. But that is not very precise.

It was the last day of 1832, 31 December, when Timothy married Lucy Irene Howe, the daughter of Ichabod and Irene (Scovill) Howe, in Cornwall Township, Litchfield County, Connecticut. On the 1840 census the family was in Sharon Township which adjoined Cornwall on the west side. Then by 1850 they were in Goshen Township, which joined Cornwall on the east side.

Timothy was one of my "moving" ancestors. He and the family left Connecticut and were in Leroy Township in Lake County Ohio by the 1860 census. In 1870 the family was living in Illinois in Rivoli Township in Mercer County. Then they moved to Saline County Nebraska where Timothy died on 5 Jul 1877. He was buried in Atlanta Cemetery in Atlanta Township in Saline County. Apparently Timothy had made an application for a homestead there in Saline County because 2 years after he died on 30 Jun 1879 a patent for 80 acres was issued to Lucy I. Chase, widow of Timothy C. Chase, deceased. It was almost 3 years later when Lucy died, 10 Mar 1882. She was also buried in Atlanta Cemetery.

Timothy and Lucy had 8 children who appear to have inherited the "moving" gene. They all died in different counties:
  • Sarah = Ashtabula County, Ohio
  • Crawford = Cherokee County, Kansas
  • Wells Morgan = Clay County, Nebraska
  • Lucy Jane = Sherman County, Kansas
  • Ralph = Lake County, Ohio
  • Emily = Harper County, Oklahoma
  • Luman = Spokane County, Washington
  • Marsh = Furnas County, Nebraska.
