Ancestor Unbirthday - abt 1799 – Sarah Lollar

Another one of my 3rd gt-grandmothers was Sarah Lollar. According to the 1850 census she was born in South Carolina. It gives her age as 46 which would indicate a birth year of about 1804. However the age brackets in the 1830 and 1840 census show a female born between 1790 and 1800, so I estimate her birth year as about 1799.

By 24 Dec 1818 she was living in Franklin County Indiana because that is where she married Thomas Brown. She had at least two children with him: Isaac and Catherine. I have not found a record about what happened to Thomas, but on 20 Aug 1823, Sarah married Thomas O'Neal, as his second wife. With this Thomas Sarah had 14 children, so altogether that makes 16 children for her. According to a family record her husband Thomas O'Neal died in 1847. Sometime before the 1850 census, she along with some of her children moved to Bartholomew County Indiana. Seven of the children were listed in her household including my 2nd gt-grandfather, Commodore Perry O'Neal. The family record shows her death date as 17 Apr 1854.

Much of the information about this family comes from a family record which is said to have been kept by James Albert O'Neal, one of Sarah's grandsons. I do appreciate my cousin, Linda Wyatt, who shared this information with me. This is from one of the pages from that record.

The Children of Benjamin and Mary Albertson?

If you have been following this the past few days you know that my 5th great-grandfather, Benjamin Albertson had two wives named Mary. I believe that Benjamin married Mary Small in 1760, then married a second time to Mary Wyatt in 1769. Yesterday I showed how I determined that my 4th great-grandfather Benjamin Albertson was born after 1769.

Today I want to look at the rest of the children of Benjamin and Mary. Since the births of the children of Benjamin and Mary (both of them) are not recorded in the Quaker records, I need to try other avenues. I have one good source to use. Both Benjamin and Mary (Wyatt) left wills.

However they don't list the children in exactly the same order, so I can't be sure of the order of births. This will take a lot more research to try to determine who was born when and if any are the children of Mary Small.

I transcribed the will of Benjamin on June 24th & 25th. The children named are Benjamin, who received half of the land. Then Aron and Joshua who shared the other half. Joshua received another bequest. Next he lists Phariby Albertson who received personal property. Then Miriam Anderson (who had married in 1790) and Joseph Albertson who received an amount of money. The rest of the estate was to be divided between his wife Mary and daughter Sarah Albertson (she had married an Albertson cousin in 1798).

Mary wrote her will in 1807 and gave a money amount to each of the following: Joseph, Benjamin, Aaron, Sarah's children, Pharaby Griffen. The balance was to go to Joshua. You may notice that Miriam is not mentioned. It is possible that she had died, but I don't know why she wasn't mentioned.

So I still have questions about the children in this family and more research needs to be tried. Maybe I will never know for sure.

Which Mary Was the Mother of Benjamin Albertson?

Yesterday I wrote about my 5th great-grandfather, Benjamin Albertson and his two wives named Mary. I believe that Benjamin married Mary Small in 1760, then married a second time to Mary Wyatt in 1769. I had come to this conclusion a number of years ago and asked for a second opinion from Raymond Winslow, a well-respected North Carolina researcher. He agreed it appeared probable. But then he noted that to determine which Mary was my ancestor, I needed to try to find when my 4th great-grandfather, Benjamin Albertson, was born. Was he born before or after 1769?

Of course the births of the children of Benjamin and Mary (both of them) are not recorded in the Quaker records. So using the suggestion of Mr. Winslow, I researched the 1800 to 1830 censuses for Perquimans County North Carolina to try to discover the approximate date for Benjamin's birth.

I located a Benjamin Albertson that I believe was my 4th gt-grandfather in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 censuses. When his son was married in 1824 it stated his father was deceased, so he was not in 1830. Since those censuses do not give an age, but a range, my calculations have to be an approximate. These are the results:
1800 -- age 16-26 = birthdate 1774 - 1784
1810 -- age 26-45 = birthdate 1765 - 1784
1820 -- age 26-45 = birthdate 1775 - 1794
Using all these censuses together it indicates he was born between 1775 and 1784. Therefore he would have been born after 1769 and his mother was Mary Wyatt. I do have one more clue to substantiate this belief. One of Benjamin's grandsons was named Nathan Wyatt Albertson.

But what about Benjamin's brothers and sisters. How do they fit? I will try to write about that tomorrow.
