52 Ancestors 2020 – 3 – Long Line – Joseph Kimball

I have chosen to interpret this topic by choosing the sibling from this birthday week who was born the longest time ago.

Joseph Kimball, an 8^th great-granduncle of mine won this contest. Joseph was born a little over 350 years ago on 20 January 1661/62 in Wenham, Massachusetts. Of course at that time it was not a state, but a part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Joseph was the son of Henry and Mary (Riddlesdale) Kimball. Henry was probably still a teenager when the family immigrated to the Colonies from Rattlesden, Suffolk, England in 1634 on the ship Elizabeth. Henry was the son of Richard and Ursula (Scott) Kimball. So of course they were Joseph's grandparents. They first settled at Watertown and Henry and Mary were married by 1641. They moved to Ipswich about 1646 and then to Wenham about ten years later. My ancestor, Abigail Kimball, was born about 1652 at Ipswich and Joseph was born after they had moved.

It helps when a family history has been written and has been placed online at familysearch.org: The History of the Kimball Family in America. Also on the New England Historic Genealogical Society website, AmericanAncestors.org, there is a sketch for Henry Kimball in the Early New England Families 1641-1700 by Alicia Crane Williams, Lead Genealogist. However there is a conflict in the information given. The family history gives the name of Joseph's wife as Elizabeth Needham. This is the wife shown in the findagrave.com memorial. They probably used the family history. However in Early New England Families, it states “More study is needed re the identification of Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Kimball.” There seems to be some problems with the Needham choice and it suggests she might be Elizabeth Halsey. So at present all I can say is that her name was Elizabeth.

According to the family history, Joseph and Elizabeth had two children born in Boston:

     Joseph born 24 Feb 1701 and died in 1767

     Mary born 27 May1703

My “Uncle Joseph” is said to have died in 1713, as the family history notes that “Administration on the estate of Joseph KIMBALL, mariner, was granted to his brother-in-law, Ezekiel NEEDHAM, 14 Apr 1713.” This is the reason that Elizabeth's name has been given as Needham. But Ms Williams explains that Ezekiel's sister had married someone else, so Ezekiel could be a brother-in-law through other relatives.

When you are researching relatives who lived that long ago, we often use published family histories. However, we must always remember there may be errors. Our goal is to get back as close as possible to the original records, whether or not it is easy to do.

Trying to Transcribe - Will of Isaac Norton - Pt 2

Here we learn what Isaac is willing to his daughters.

Viz 7th to my Daughter Abigail Beck my will is & I do give the sum of

five shillings at my decease to be at her disposal forever.

8th my will is & I do give to my daughter Mary Curtis the Dwelling

house where she now lives together with the use & improvement of the

land upon which the house stands & two rods in width of land from sd house to

my well with the use of one half of sd well during her natural life

& also the sum of ten pounds out of my household goods at her disposal forever.

9th My will is and I go give to my daughter Lydia How the sum of fifteen

pounds to be at her disposal forever after my decease.

10th my will is & I do give to my daughter Anna Scott the sum of five

shillings at my decease to be at her disposal forever.

11th my will is and I go give to my two granddaughters Lusinda King and

Lusina King the sum of Sixteen Pounds to be equally divided between

them at my decease & to be at their disposal forever.

12th my will is and I do give to my Daughter Deborah Blakely the sum fifteen

Pounds at my decease to be at her disposal forever.

Lastly my will is & I do make and ordain my Sons Isaac Norton & Joel Norton

The Children of Elias and Martha (FitzRandolph) Marsh

Yesterday, 20 Jun 2017, I wrote about Martha FitzRandolph who was married to Elias Marsh. Then I stated that I concluded they had 7 children. This is a time period where there are few birth records. I have used online trees and other records found through Ancestry.com. I based their order on the listing of the younger 5 in the Quaker records at Salem Monthly Meeting in Columbiana County Ohio. Here are some of my conclusions.

1. Mary Marsh, born in New Jersey 5 Feb 1779, married in 1795 to William Webster. On 1820 census they were in Liberty Township, Butler County Ohio. I believe she was the female age 26-44.
2. Elias Marsh, born in New Jersey 7 Sep 1788, married in 1810 to Edith Townsend. On 1820 census they were in Hanover Township, Columbiana County Ohio. I believe he was the male age 26-44.
3. Lydia Marsh, born in New Jersey 27 Aug 1790, married in 1808 to John Walton. On 1820 census they were in Butler Township, Columbiana County Ohio. I believe she was the female age 26-44.
4. Fanny Marsh, born probably in Pennsylvania about 1795, married in 1814 to Joseph Underwood. On 1820 census they were in Fairfield Township, Columbiana County Ohio. I believe she was the female age 14-25.
5. Joseph Marsh, born probably in Pennsylvania about 1796, married in 1816 to Hannah Rigby. On 1820 census they were in Hanover Township, Columbiana County Ohio. I believe he was the male age 14-25.
6. Samuel Marsh, born in Pennsylvania 4 Dec 1799, married in 1823 to Rebecca Gilbert. On 1820 census I believe he was in the household of his mother Martha Marsh in Hanover Township, Columbiana County Ohio I believe he was the male age 14-25.
7. Jane Marsh, born in Pennsylvania about 1800, married in 1817 to Joseph Scott. On 1820 census they were in Middleton Township, Columbiana County Ohio. I believe she was the female age 14-25.

I would be glad to receive any source information from other Marsh researchers than can correct or expand on what I have found.

Early Oregon Cousins - John Tong

John Tong was the son of James J. and Ann (Bond) Tong and the grandson of John and Sarah (Chastain) Bond, so was a 1st cousin of John Howard Bond, my great-grandfather which makes John Tong my 1st cousin 3 times removed.

John was the only son in the family, having 3 sisters: Sarah, Rachel and Rebecca. He was born 5 Feb 1846, probably in Marion County, Iowa, since they were there in 1850. Some researchers show the Tongs coming to Oregon on the Nelson Davis wagon train in 1853 with many of Ann's family. However, I believe the Tongs came a year earlier in 1852 because: on his Donation Land Claim application James stated they had arrived in Oregon Sep 1852 and settled their claim 30 Sep 1852; the family is not on the 1853 Umatilla listing; and in his 1853 journal George Bond (Ann's brother) wrote on 22 Sep "to Fosters a Cros a deep creek to James Tongs." So the Tongs were already settled when the Nelson Davis train arrived.

The 1850 census showed the James Tong family next door to the Solomon Bond family, both in Marion County Iowa. John was listed as John N, age 5. By 1860 the family had settled in Clackamas County Oregon in Rock Creek Precinct and John was age 14. The name Tong is sometimes difficult to research because the handwritten capital T is misread as an L, so it is indexed incorrectly. But in the BLM General Land Office records of the James and Ann Tong Donation Land Claim, their name is misread as Toug so required a little more work to find. His claim appears to be near what is now (2017) the unincorporated community of Clackamas.

It was near the end of 1868, 10 Dec, when John married Nancy Ann Heater in Marion County Oregon. But they were living in Marshfield precinct Clackamas County in 1870 next to his sister Sarah who was married to George Wise. It must have been soon that John settled his homestead because he received the patent 11 Nov 1875. His father James received a patent for a homestead the same day and his land joined John's on the north, 160 acres each. It seems likely that James had sold his Donation Land Claim and filed for the homestead to be next to his son. They are on the same page in the 1880 census for Clackamas County, still in Marshfield precinct. John's sister, Rachel Emma who was married to Jacob Scott, was also living there.

By the 1880 census John and Nancy had 4 children: Stephen, Nettie, Earl and Mary. They had 3 more children in the next 10 years: Fletcher, Marion and Rachel. The 1900 census shows the family living in Damascus precinct of Clackamas County, but this is probably the same location as before. It was between the 1880 and 1900 census when John's mother died in 1884, then John's father was committed to the Hawthorne Asylum in July of 1887. James died there in that October.

Sometime after 1900 John's family moved to Portland, Multnomah County Oregon, where his wife Nancy died 31 Jan 1909 and was buried in Multnomah Park Cemetery. John had 4 of his children still living at home in the 1910 census and his daughter Mary and her husband Edwin Plasket were living with him in 1920. John died 6 May 1922 in the Oregon City Hospital and was buried next to Nancy. His obituary states that John was survived by all 7 of his children.
