It
was over 350 years ago when my 8th great-grandfather, Jeremiah Howe,
was born. This Jeremiah Howe was the son of a Jeremiah and also had a
son and grandson named Jeremiah. He was my first Jeremiah Howe to be
born in colonial America, as his father had immigrated from England
in 1635.
Jeremiah
was born 8 Jul 1650 in New Haven Colony, Connecticut. It is believed
that many of the family moved to the town of Wallingford about 1672,
just a few years after it was founded.. Looking at the Barbour
Collection of Connecticut Vital Records to 1870 for Wallingford there
are 14 entries for the name Jeremiah with births, marriages and
deaths. Some seem to be duplicates, but there are 12 distinct
entries. They were for 5 different Jeremiahs, including 1 who died as
an infant. My 8th great-grandfather Jeremiah was alive while the
other 4 were born, his son, grandson, and 2 great-grandsons. It makes
it interesting to try to determine which one was which.
Using
the Howe Genealogies compiled
by Daniel Wait Howe in 1929, I believe the following entries in
Wallingford apply to this Jeremiah.
- Jeremiah, m. Oct. 29, 1674 [Genealogies gives her name as Elizabeth Peck]
- Jeremiah, m. Elesebath Culuer, Dec. 17, 1701, by Mr. Street [Elizabeth Culver]
- Jeremiah Sr., m. wid. Mary Cook, Apr 9, 1705, by Justice Hall
- Jeremiah, d. Sept 22, 1740, a 90 y.
His
birth was recorded in the New Haven Vital Records as 8th July 1650.
The
Genealogies lists 6 children with his 1st wife: Jeremiah, Bathsheba,
Ephraim, Mathew, Mary and Ebenezer; 1 child with his 2nd wife:
Joshua; and 1 child with his 3rd wife: Sarah.
